This usually happens when a dog has previously been eating chemically flavoured food. Even foods marketed as healthy and natural often contain large amounts of cheap wheat, maize and salt, with only a minimum of meat. A recipe like that requires chemical preservation. Really good quality kibble should not contain artificial colourings or harmful substances, and above all no chemical preservatives. Even the best-known brands use preservatives to extend shelf life. A typical best-before period is 18 to 24 months, and it is worth checking the packaging carefully to see exactly what the food contains. Some preservatives are banned in several countries and classed as highly carcinogenic for animals. Some manufacturers hide these substances on the label, describing them simply as "EU-approved additives".
The most common chemical preservatives are:
BHA or butylated hydroxyanisole (E 320) – permitted in the EU and the USA, but strictly prohibited in Japan. In California it is officially listed as a carcinogen.
Propyl gallate (E 310) – a substance that can cause stomach upsets and allergic reactions.
BHT or butylated hydroxytoluene (E 321) – toxic to the liver, kidneys, lungs and ovaries. Many international organisations recommend avoiding it in kibble.
What makes Bemo food different?
Our food contains no artificial additives or preservatives (which is why its shelf life is 6 months). You won't find GMOs, wheat, maize, gluten, soya or lactose in it. We want your furry friend to eat naturally, because their health matters to us. If you want your dog to switch to a new food, be patient. They may not like it at first, but after a while you will see positive changes in their digestion and immunity for yourself. Your pet will certainly thank you for it. As you can see, switching your dog to new kibble may not be all that easy. But it is well worth the effort, because your four-legged friend deserves the best quality food.
