A dog and a cat together? Sounds impossible? In fact, there are several ways to make it work. Read on to find out how.
We often hear about people fighting "like cats and dogs", but dogs and cats don't have to be enemies. Despite their differences and occasional misunderstandings, a friendship between them is entirely possible. Age matters most here: the earlier you get a dog and a cat used to living together, the fewer problems you will have later on. Nothing lasts longer than a friendship formed in childhood. Things are different with breeds that are naturally more aggressive or don't tolerate other species – they may struggle to accept a new housemate. With cats, the situation is a little different. Cats are territorial animals that like to mark their place. If you already have a cat and would like a dog as well, a puppy is the best choice. Young dogs that haven't yet met other animals settle in more quickly, and the worst your cat is likely to feel is mild irritation at the newcomer's eagerness to play. If you want to adopt an adult dog and already have a cat, changing the dog's habits and getting the cat used to the newcomer can be difficult, and sometimes impossible. That is why it is important to be careful when the two animals first meet. If the problem proves too much for you to solve on your own, consult an animal behaviourist – for them it won't be a major challenge and they will certainly be able to help.
In summary
A friendship between a cat and a dog is possible, although in some cases it takes more time and commitment on your part. Don't give up, though – your efforts can bring exactly the results you are hoping for.
