Feeding your dog correctly, and puppies in particular, is essential if you want to look after their health and provide all the nutrients they need. Read on to find out how to feed your puppy properly.
Feeding puppies the right way
Depending on the breed, puppies reach adulthood between 10 months and 2 years of age. This is when a dog's diet changes the most, as they move from their mother's milk to complete food. During this time puppies are more sensitive to any changes in their surroundings, so getting them used to a new food should be done gradually. This way you can be sure you won't harm your pet and will avoid unwanted digestive reactions. The transition from milk to complete food can take several weeks. During this period, the best option is moist food, such as soft food or dry kibble softened with water. Hard treats are best saved for later, when your puppy is fully able to crunch a variety of solid foods. Small and toy breeds (up to 10 kg) should stay on a puppy diet for about 12 months, and larger breeds for up to 18 months.
What to look for when choosing a food
Make sure the food is designed specifically for puppies – adult dog food may actually be harmful at this stage. Check the label for details such as protein and fat content. It is best to avoid harmful sugars, flavour enhancers, preservatives and colourings, as well as soya, dairy products and wheat. Stick to the recommended feeding frequency and portion sizes; the daily amount depends on breed and size.
